The difference between Tu and te

Hi everyone, I am just learning and starting with spanish, and I see te and tú often. They seem to be interchangeable with one another, are they? If they aren't then what are the differences between the two?

Thanks for any answers.

Tu (no accent ) means your

Tú (with accent) means you

Te is both a direct object pronoun and indirect object pronoun for you.

The grammar section for pronouns has more details on this subject.

Tú means "your" while te means you.

As an example:

"¿Comó te llamas?" "What do you call yourself?"

But you probably would not use 'te' with someone whose name you do not know unless it was a child. - kirk1, Apr 23, 2013

Te quiero (indirect object) I love you

Tú me quieres (pronoun) You love me

Te haces la tonta (indirect object) You play dumb

Tú eres una tonta (pronoun) You are dumb

Tú (you) is used when speaking or writing to a friend with whom you are close enough to use the familiar term, a child or a subordinate in an organization or business. Te is the direct object pronoun, the indirect object pronoun and the reflexive pronoun used with the same people with whom you would use tú.
