The same happens with pez and pescado, happens with pelota, balón, esférico and bola. Pelota and balón is mainly used for football, basketball, handball, rugby, volleyball, etc... in soccer also used esférico. In baseball only pelota or bola. Bola is used primarily with golf, tennis, billiard, bowling, cricket, hockey, ping-pong, etc...
