Panama has the US Dollar too only it's called the Balboa (after Rocky obviously). The notes (bills) are US dollars but the coins are minted in country. You can use US coins there but cannot use Panamanian cents in the US. I think this goes for El Salvador and Ecuador too but could be wrong.

The US$ is common currency almost everywhere in Latin America.

It sits alongside the national currency and is preferred for many transactions.

He's talking about having the USD as the national currency. In Colombia, although you can pay with USD in some places it is very uncommon outside big cities and you will lose out big time on the exchange rate when the USD is accepted. - afowen, Apr 18, 2013
No estoy de acuerdo ... muchos paises tuve ir al banco to exchange my dollars - readytodictate, Apr 18, 2013
Every where I went US$ could be changed on the street and used in shops etc. - ian-hill, Apr 18, 2013
You can't here... - afowen, Apr 18, 2013
Although if you want to pay for stuff in my pub I'll change USD at the mid-market rate, better for you, better for me! - afowen, Apr 18, 2013
afo is right if you change it on the street or in a pub you won't get top dollar ... go the the bank! - readytodictate, Apr 19, 2013
The mid-market rate is much better than in a bank! That is the rate on which the banks take their base before they take their profit! In some countries where people have a lot of ill-gained money you will get a much better rate on the black market... - afowen, Apr 19, 2013
... If I have 100 million pesos that I can't bank, I'm likely to buy hard currency at a favourable rate to the seller in order to get my money out of the country... - afowen, Apr 19, 2013

afo is right if you exchange it on the street or in a pub you won't get the best rate ... maybe half what you'll get at a bank ... always go the the bank!
