You can say: Mi abuela ha estado enferma recientemente, or Mi abuela ha estado enferma hace poco. Both are correct - Plata_y_Oro, Apr 16, 2013
Mi abuela a estado enferma recientemente - Neox, Apr 16, 2013
Gracias, also I see that estar is better than soy, of course!! Neox, is "a estado" the same as "ha estado"? - Stu123, Apr 16, 2013
I don't know why we are all answering here, but yes, Neox means "ha." a vs ha is to Spanish as your vs you're is in English, it's very easy for native speakers to make mistakes. - BigMike, Apr 16, 2013
Gracias, Wasn't trying to fault neox (i'm in no position to do that!), just trying to understand!! - Stu123, Apr 17, 2013

Also in the Americas it´s common to use recién, but with simple past tense, ie Recién mi abuela se puso enferma.

To use hace poco, we would say Hace poco que se enfermó mi abuela.
