Often nouns fit into these simple categories:

if it ends in 'a' it's a feminine noun (la)

if it ends in 'o' it's a masculine noun (el)

But, as in every language, there are exceptions and you should memorize them. Wondering why is your brain trying to get a familiar structure to hang the new language on. But, alas, there is none for this since we don't have it in English. Just realize, in Spanish, this is the way it is. It doesn't have to make sense. Eventually, as you use them, it will ''sound right".

There are some fairly general rules that you can find under the several good articles in the Learn -> grammar -> articles section on this site (See the blue toolbar above).

Greek words (like tema, mapa, etc. are often "el" words).

Words that end in 'dad' are often 'la' words (like ciudad).

If you want even more info, you can go to the Q&A, and in the little search box under "Ask a Question" type in, masculine, feminine, articles or something like that and you'll get many other answers to your questions going back to the site's beginning.

Because you're fluent in English, please read the rules for posting questions on this forum. Correct English would be: Using (capital U) feminine (spelling) and masculine articles (spelling).

BigMike answered your question in Spanish. The answer in English is "because that's what it is in Spanish".

Whether a noun is masculine or feminine has nothing to do with "male" or "female". It has to do with, for the most part, what the original gender was in Latin, but mostly what it has evolved to be in Spanish. By the way the evolution of masculine and feminine is pretty much over so you need to learn the proper article "la" or "el" when you learn the noun and not think that it is up for discussion or reasons why.

Honestly this is the best advice I can give you.

Aunque hay reglas generales para determinar si una palabra es masculino o feminino, hay muchas palabras que no se puede distinguir fácilmente. Según las reglas normales, que yo sepa no hay nada que indica si la palabra "carne" debe ser masculino o feminino. Tendrá que memorizarla nomás.
