Is "cómo" only used in questions?

Or can you use "cómo" in a regular sentence. I'm proofreading someone's work and I'm not sure. Here is the sentence: Lo que realmente se destacó para mi fue cómo las chicas en mi grupo de discusion hablaron de uno al otro.

Yes, 'cómo' can be used in a normal sentence, just as 'how' is used in a question or normal sentence in English.

Aside from being used in a question, cómo can also be used to indicate something requiring explanation or the speaker´s annoyance, ie "Entonces quieres que lo haga cómo tu me dijiste ¿verdad?" and "¡Cómo es posible que este imbécil me hable así!"

Also in admiration, ie "¡Pero cómo es guapísima esa mujer!"

Lo que realmente se destacó para mí fue cómo las chicas en mi grupo de discusión hablaron de uno al otro.

In this sentence I have the feeling that the writer found it strange that these girls talked about one another, rather than to one another. In this case we can also use cómo as indicating something strange. However, I would have used past imperfect of hablar in this case.

Cómo has other various meanings: ie - cómo un muchacho = like a child

No, como can also mean "like." "¡como esto!" = "like this!" Similar to "Qué" meaning: "What" or you can say: "que" (without quotation mark) to mean "than" Más bueno que el pan! = More good than bread! :D
