Track and Field Vocabulary

I am very interested in the sport of track and field, and I was wondering about the Spanish equivalents for these seemly impossible to translate terms from this sport (also known as athletics). I have tried many resources and been unable to come up with a satisfactory answer.

  • Track and field (the sport)- is the term really "atletismo"?
  • Spikes/Cleats (the kind with metal nail-like things you screw in the bottoms, used for the running events)
  • Time (as in your "time" for a race–tiempo or something else?)
  • Indoor Track (the sport, track in the winter)
  • How do you refer to a running race of a certain number of meters, for example in English we say the 800 meter run (or just the "800") or the 400 meter run (or just "400"). How do you refer to these events in Spanish?

Yes it's called el atletismo but I've also heard 'el track y field'

Here's some vocab:

cronometrar is the verb used for timing a race (eg on a stop watch)

Los 100 m - is how you'd say 'the 100 meters'

Los 400 metros vallas - is how you'd say 'the 400 meters hurdles'

time is 'tiempo'

This example from Wiki

En 2009, durante la final de 100 metros del Campeonato del Mundo de Berlín, el jamaicano Usain Bolt tocó con la mano esta barrera, estableciendo un nuevo récord mundial, con un tiempo de 9 s 58, con un viento favorable pequeño

el relevo relay

la pista race track

la pista cubierta indoor track

salto de longitud long jump

salto de altura high jump

triple salto triple jump

esprint sprint

lanzamiento de bala shot put

salto de vallas hurdles

la pistola gun

cronómetro stopwatch

el bloque block

los clavos spikes (on shoes)

Anybody remember the great Cuban 400m man Alberto "El Caballo" Juantorena? Virtually unbeatable in his day.
