I think in Ecuador and Peru they consider the apellido del esposo official for the esposa. In Argentina they only have one last name. WHat other countries have only one last name?

In Perú they use 2 surnames, first the parternal and then the maternal.

For instance, the president of Perú is Ollanta Humala Tasso

-"Ollanta" is his given name

-"Humala"is his father's paternal surname

-"Tasso" is his mother's paternal surname

A woman can add officially their husband's paternal last name to theirs, by adding "de".

Nadine Heredia Alarcón is Humala's wife, and she can be called "Nadine Heredia Alarcón de Humala". This system with the "de" isn't used in Chile (where I live) in any official way.

I think this 2 last names system is the most common one around America and is used also in Spain, but it may vary in the details

Interesting question. I believe in Mexico mostly there is only one surname. I use surname becase in some parts of the world the surname is not the last name.
