Broma vs Chiste....

I've long wondered about the difference between these two. A chiste is just a humorous story, you know, the whole "Two guys walked into a bar..." thing.

A broma, on the other hand, is more like a practical joke. Like putting a fart cushion in someones seat. However, all bromas are not create equal. You have a "broma inocente" and a "broma pesada". A "broma inocente" is a light-hearted joke, while a broma pesada" would be something a little more serious. More like a cruel prank, something that went a little to far.

Hmm,

I'm not sure about charlar y chatear, but I think chatear is specifically for internet chatting, like with MSN or Yahoo Messenger while charlar and platicar are for chatting with real people, face to face.

"Chatear" is spanglish.

That was true until this year. Chatear is now officially in the RAE. If you look it up , it directs you to the word chat:

chat. Voz tomada del inglés chat (‘charla’), que significa ‘conversación entre personas conectadas a Internet, mediante el intercambio de mensajes electrónicos’ y, más frecuentemente, ‘servicio que permite mantener este tipo de conversación’. Es voz masculina y su plural es chats (? plural, 1h): «Los españoles se conectan a los chats una media de 6,3 días al mes» (Teknokultura [P. Rico] 8.01). Es anglicismo asentado y admisible, aunque se han propuesto sustitutos como cibercharla o ciberplática (? ciber-). Está igualmente asentado el uso del verbo derivado chatear, ‘mantener una conversación mediante el intercambio de mensajes electrónicos’.

True, I always considered Spanglish as an English word that's used informally, but is not officially part of the Spanish language. But once it becames adopted into the RAE it's now no longer Spanglish. But point taken, it's origin is from English. - rodneyp, Apr 11, 2013

"Charlar" is to chat.

"Chatear" is spanglish.

"Broma" and "chiste" are just about the same but used a little differently, ie: "Es pura broma, no te preocupes." "Te voy a contar un chiste." "Bromear" is a verb and "chiste" has no verb.

And "chiste" is also used as an idiomatic word, ie "Que lo hagas no tiene chiste" ..... "it makes no sense that you do it."

It can be in a chat online or in real life, it´s the same. If you are telling an anecdote/story, "Estás contando un chiste."

If you are talking nonsense/joking around, "Estás bromeando."
