formular (for-moo-lahr’)

(verb) to formulate, to phrase

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

** 1. Acuérdense de que la tarea para mañana es formular preguntas sobre la lectura.**

  • Remember that your homework for tomorrow is to formulate questions about the reading.*

** 2. Cuando Alberto le pidió la mano a Beatriz, ella formuló cuidadosamente su respuesta. No quería herirlo al decirle directamente que "no".**

  • When Alberto asked for Beatriz's hand in marriage, she phrased her answer carefully. She didn't want to hurt him by directly answering "no."*

Thanks to everyone that has been helping to correct in the palabra del día. I know it is a time-consuming job and we all are very appreciative of your work and dedication to us and to SD!!

We still haven't heard from Annie (Rac1) and we think her internet went down. We are sure Annie will be back when she is able to! -Martha-

Hi Martha. #1should read either "recuerden que" or "acuérdense de que" - cogumela, Apr 5, 2013
Thanks, Cogu! - martha-sd, Apr 5, 2013
To phrase is actually not the same.. - annierats, Apr 5, 2013
In English, they are obviously not always the same, but they're not being called synonyms in English here. Formular Does indeed translate to both formulate and phrase, in Spanish, and I'd think that That was what was meant. - rogspax, Apr 6, 2013

There is no magic formula for success in life; one only must be kind, compassionate and honest in all that one does.

No existe una fórmula mágica para el éxito en la vida; solo hay que ser amable, compasivo y sincero en todo lo que hace.

Muchos se creen expertos formulando preguntas muy complicadas. Pero lo triste del caso es que ni ellos mismos saben responderlas.

Many people seem to be experts at formulating complicated questions. But the sad part is that they don't even know how to answer them.

True. I think to get the feeling of mismo, one might prefer to end that sentence ... them themselves.. When simply spoken, and not thought about, I promise the double them doesn´t sound awkward. Just a thought. - rogspax, Apr 6, 2013

Hace siete años, formulé mi plan para aprender el español. Sería fluido en dos años. Por desgracia, todavía esto no ha pasado, aunque continúo intentar.

Seven years ago, I formulated my plan for learning Spanish. I would be fluent in two years. Unfortunately, this still hasn't happened, although I continue to try.

I'd say "en la clase de quimica" to be clear. Also, I'd use "era" because we don't have a set time period. Typo: interesante. - --Mariana--, Apr 5, 2013
