el puerto ( poo-ehr'-toh )

noun ( port, harbor )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Fuimos al puerto a recoger a mi tía que venía en crucero.

We went to the harbor to pick up my aunt who was coming on a cruise.

2. El área de los puertos se está remodelando para que sea más ameno a los turistas.

The port area is being remodeled so that it is more enjoyable for tourists.

I wanted to send a special thanks to everyone that has been helping to correct in the palabra del dia. I know it is a time-consuming job and we all are very appreciative of your work and dedication to us and to SD!!

La nave ha sido atada al muelle para que no se suelte y acabe a la deriva en el puerto.

The vessel has been tied to the dock so it doesn't break free and wind up adrift in the harbor.

Para computadores, se puede decir "el portal USB" así como ¨el puerto USB¨ en español, pero ¨el puerto¨ es más común - y en todo caso notando que USB sirve como adjectivo.

For computers, one can say "el portal USB" as well as ¨el puerto USB¨ in Spanish, but ¨el puerto¨ is more common, and in any case noting that USB is used as an adjective.

Hoy diá, los vienen en muchas formas, p. ej.

Hoy el viento es muy fuerte y el mar es agitado con la consecuencia de que las barcas necesitan quedar en el puerto para al menos un otro día

Today the wind is very strong and the sea is rough, with the result that, the boats need to stay in port for at least another day.

In fact it was Napoleon Bonaparte who saved and extended the port of Antwerp. Today the Bonaparte docks are a marina.

De hecho era Napoleón Bonaparte que salvó y amplió el puerto de Amberes. Hoy en día los muelles de Bonaparte son un puerto deportivo.

Unfortunately, most of the navies couldn't return to their ports in World War One. navy

Forgive me if I'm stepping on toes, I can't remember your 1st language. But it would be more clear to say, "navy fleets" since 'navies' includes the organization and not just the ship. - katydew, Mar 23, 2013

El puerto del Callao fue el princial puerto de las colonias, por lo que era blanco permanente de ataques de piratas y corsarios, como muestra de ellos se sabe que en 1579, el corsario inglés Francis Drake atacó violentamente el puerto. En la actualidad el puesrto del Calllao es considerado uno de los mejores de la costa sudamericana del pacífico.

The port of Callao was the main port of the colonies, so it was permanent target of attacks by pirates and privateers, for instance it is known that in 1579, the English privateer Francis Drake violently attacked the port. Today the port of the Calllao is considered one of the best in the Pacific South American coast.

Yes, and very clear, it's easy to watch fish quite a few fathoms down. It's said to be one of the best and most sheltered ports in the world. Everyone wanted it for strategic purposes when it was down to who commanded the sea. - lagartijaverde, Mar 23, 2013
