"Qué está" vs "Qué hay"

Question

Is there a difference between: ¿Qué hay en la mesa? and ¿Qué está en la mesa? ¿Qué hay en el armario? and ¿Qué está en el armario?

I have seen both forms but I wonder if one is used in lieu of another in certain cases.

Technically both are the same, but you should always use ¿Qué hay en la mesa? because ¿Qué está en la mesa? sounds a little bit awkward.

I would use "está" when talking about a specific thing:

¿Dónde está el libro?

Está en la mesa.

¿Qué está en la mesa? and ¿qué está en el armario? are weird things to say. I am not going to say they are wrong, but you will get some funny looks if you phrase it that way.

As I understand it, the hay has more of the idea of the sum total of what is one the table & the estar is more of just what is on it. I'd love to hear what the rest of you think.

¿Qué hay en la mesa? - What all is there on the table?

¿Qué está en la mesa? - What is on the table?

¿Qué hay en el armario? - What all is there in the wardrobe?

¿Qué está en el armario? - What is in the wardrobe?

Sí, los dos están buenos. Creo que se usa ¨hay¨ más frecuentemente.
