tropical ( troh-pee-kahl' )

adjective ( tropical )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Quiero ir a un país tropical y ver los animales salvajes y las plantas silvestres.

I want to go to a tropical country and see the wild animals and uncultivated plants.

2. Sebastián adora las frutas tropicales, como la papaya, el mango y la piña.

Sebastián adores tropical fruits, like papaya, mango, and pineapple.

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Ew papaya tastes like...I'm not gonna say it.: ) - Ranman, Mar 21, 2013
Ranman, yew know that if yew move to MX you have to learn to like it. hahahaha - katydew, Mar 21, 2013
Mientras estuviera en países tropicales, siempre comía.. - diagonx, Mar 21, 2013
When we use "mientras" with a conditional meaning (being in tropical places) subjunctive is to be used - diagonx, Mar 21, 2013
And I dislike papaya too, I don't even like its smell - diagonx, Mar 21, 2013
I'd rather have honeydew; ) - Ranman, Mar 21, 2013
Diagonx - thanks so much for the corrections and the lesson. - katydew, Mar 21, 2013
Guys, guys, papaya is the best fruit on the face of the earth. How can you dislike it so much. jejejej - katydew, Mar 21, 2013
Ups, sorry but I have to correct something. There is no reason to use subjuntive in this sentence, since he did stay for some time (days, years, I dont knot, but he was in those places) - luisssito, Mar 21, 2013
The literally translation should be: "Mientras él estaba en los países tropicales......" - luisssito, Mar 21, 2013
I love papaw juice :)) - luisssito, Mar 21, 2013
What is papaw juice? - rac1, Mar 21, 2013
No need to be sorry luissito, but we first would have to know if Katy meant to state a conditional or a continuous action in the past, if it's indeed conditional then the subjunctive should be used - diagonx, Mar 21, 2013
Thanks diagonx! Well this is a sentence in past continous, there is no any condition. If Katy wanted to use it as a conditional sentence in the past, the sentece should be: - luisssito, Mar 22, 2013
Si él hubiera estado en los países tropicales, habría comido papaya todos los días, which in English is: If he had been in tropical countries, he would have eaten papaya each day. - luisssito, Mar 22, 2013
In my example, you have you use the subjuntive, indeed. - luisssito, Mar 22, 2013
I'm a little confused so I left the 'estaba' that I originally had, and changed the verb form for comer. Hope it's ok? - katydew, Mar 22, 2013

El mes pasado, estuve de vacaciones en una zona tropical. Desde luego, no quería volver a casa. La mañana del regreso, hacía 80° Fahrenheit, y estaba soleado. Fuimos al aeropuerto para el vuelo de vuelta, y al aterrizar, hacía 30 °F, y estaba oscuro ya. ¡Qué deprimente!

Last month I was on vacation in a tropical place. Of course, I didn't want to come home. The morning of my return, it was 80°F and sunny. We went to the airport for the return flight, and when we landed it was 30°F, and it was already dark. How depressing!

Aunque el concepto de vivir en algún lugar tropical suena muy bien durante el invierno, cuando visito un lugar tropical por un tiempo, noto que el calor empieza a cargarme, y al final de las vacaciones estoy dispuesto a regresar a casa.

Even though the concept of living in some tropical place sounds very good in the winter, when I visit a tropical place for a while, I find that the heat begins to wear on me, and at the end of the vacation I am ready to return home.
