Es que las naranjas son ricas en vitamina C. También las empanadas de Chile son ricas.

In the text book, the author explains that ricas means "rich,, full" or delicious. I found that "son" always follow ricas in the sentence. what's the role of "son"? =)

In this sentence, "son" is the helping word of "rica."

"Son rica" means that they are rich (good quality, delicious). To translate the whole sentence, it would mean this in English:

Es que las naranjas son ricas en vitamina C. It is that oranges are rich in Vitamin C. I hope you are satisfied by my response.

"Son" is not a helping word...it's a verb all by itself. It means "to be." - --Mariana--, Mar 19, 2013
