Do we put an accent when we capitalize the letter. For example: él -> E'l?

La RAE dice que "El empleo de la mayúscula no exime de poner la tilde..." Mire:

http://buscon.rae.es/dpd/?key=pronombres&origen=REDPD

The RAE (the official "rule book" for Spanish usage) says that "The use of a capital letter does not exempt putting the written accent mark when the rules call for it" see: (the website inserted).

Excellent! So, my Mexican friends who deliberately wrote in all caps in school to avoid messing with the accent marks were in the wrong after all! - brian5764, Mar 16, 2013

I think that Athenaura is asking if she has to put the accent in capital letters, so, I learned in the school that you don't need to put accent in Capitals (mayúsculas in spanish), even if the word has an accent at the first letter, but it's mandatory to put it when it's after the first word in the paragraph/sentence. =)

Hi Athenaura.

You typed the accent over the lower-case e, é. Am I to infer from this that you’ve remapped your keyboard? (This is easy to do by the way.) If so, you get an É the same way; just remember to hit Shift as well.

Copying and pasting should never be necessary. Even if you haven’t yet remapped your keyboard, virtually anything you need is either in the ASCII text or the ANSI text extended character sets. The input code for É is Alt-144.

If you need to remap your keyboard, you can Google it. Or, you can read this older post:

If you’re asking about style/grammar—as opposed to the technical—yes and no. You should use them, just to be on the safe side. Many claim that they’re not required over capital letters, though. - brian5764, Mar 15, 2013
thank you Brian.. that was very helpful - Athena-Aura, Mar 16, 2013

Yes you do. For PC users go here: http://www.onehourprogramming.com/spanish-accents/

I have been using this and it works great.

Sorry, I do not know of a similar program for macs.
