Tratar de vs tratarse de

Siempre me han confundido los verbos "tratar (de/sobre) y tratarse de."
¿Me pregunto si hay una diferencia entre los dos?
Esta es la frase que estoy tratando de completar:
La teoría de la relatividad [trata de/ se trata de] el movimiento de masas en un espacio-tiempo plano, que describe la manera en la que se mueven los planetas u otras masas celestiales.

The correct answer is "trata de". "Tratar de algo" means "to be about something", for example un libro, una película, un artículo, un folleto... This book is about a little girl who bla bla bla... Este libro TRATA DE una niña pequeña que...
Also, tratar de + infinitivo means "to try to"..."tratar de llamar por teléfono" = "to try to make a call"
"Tratarse de" is used in a different way for example -¿Qué pasa? -Se trata de Juan, ha tenido un accidente.

tratarse - to have to do with, to be about

I know this is an old topic but I'm also interested in understanding this.
I think that tratar de is used when you have a subject and tratarse de is used without a subject.
eg. with subject: "Esta película trata de los animales"
eg. without subject: "Se trata de los animales."
Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

Yes, there is a considerable difference in meaning between these verbs tratar de/ tratarse de dependent upon the context! It is not my intention to cover all the meanings but to cover some of them with examples and finish with the one that applies to your sentence
To start with, lets look at tratar de + the infinitive of requiered verb
ex: Trató de arrancar su coche tres veces antes de llamar (por teléfono) a su mecánico = He tried (attempted) to start his car three times before phoning his mechanic.
Tratar can also mean to be about
tratar de o sobre de
¿De qué trata el libro? = What's the book about?
There are other uses of the verb: tratar
to treat (people)
ex: Me tratan muy bien/Me trata como si fuera de la familia =They treat me very well/ They treat me as if I were one of the family
Tratarse can have a number of meanings.
1 relational tratarse con alguien
ex: No me gusta la gente con la que se trata = I don't like the people he mixes with/I don't like the people with whom he mixes.
2 Reciprocal:
ex Se tratan de Usted =They address each other as Usted
3 tratarse de = to be about (en tercera persona)
ex: ¿De que se trata? = What is it all about
You would (should) therefore use the verb tratarse in your sentence:
