Imperfect Progressive reflexive?

Question

I'm not sure the order of words for this tense.

For example:

"They were going to bed" Se estaban acostando? Estaban acostandose?

I think the second one is right, if so, why?

I believe either construction is grammatically correct, but be sure to use a tilde in acostándose.

Yes, either of those is correct (with the use of the accent). From my personal experience, the first one on your list would be the more common one when spoken by a native speaker.

Ok, so when object/reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, lo/la, le, nos, os, los/las, les) can only be attached to a verb under certain conditions. An object/reflexive pronoun can be attached: if the verb is a(n) A.) infinitive, B.) Positive command, C.)present progresssive verb (which is the case here). Additionally, they can usually be detached from the verb as well, though not always.
