áspero ( ah'-speh-roh )

adjective ( rough, coarse, harsh )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. La corteza del árbol estaba muy áspera.

The tree bark was very rough.

2. Tenía la voz muy áspera por haber fumado todos esos años.

He had a coarse voice for having smoked all those years.

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Perhaps in Spanish "tenía" might be appropriate, because his personality is something he always had, rather than just in one moment in time...just a thought. :) - PumpkinCalabaza, Mar 9, 2013
Thanks PC, I agree! :)) - Noetol, Mar 9, 2013

Creo que no hay nada más ápero que la cara de un hombre después de un día sin afeitarse. I think there isn't anything rougher than the face of a man who hasn't shaven for a day.

Great sentence, one thing in Spanish that I noticed: It should be "no sea demasiado..." because 'espero que' takes the subjunctive :) - PumpkinCalabaza, Mar 9, 2013
Thank you so much Pumpkin Caleb, ( boy that a mouthful,) I did not know that , so how would that translate into English ? - ray76, Mar 9, 2013

When a dog or a cat licks us, they are showing us their affection. However, unlike what happens with the dog´s tongue, completely smooth, the cat´s tongue is rough and rugged, and even a little hard to the touch. when noting, it is inevitable that we wonder whether there is any about the reasons to justify the roughness of the cat´s tongue. The roughness of the animal´s tongue is because of the conical papillae that lines its central part, which it is made up of queratin keratin, the substantia substance that makes our nails be hard, and these papillaes are the ones that confer this texture so special to the cat´s tongue. This texture is not a whim of nature, but it has many funtions.among One being of them is that it helps cats to drink. In fact; when dogs drink, they use their tongues as if it were a spoon, in a such way that they catch the liquid. However; cats, on the contrary, simply pull put their tongues into the water or milk and drink the liquid that is trapped between the roughness of the same.

Good! Also, "dog or cat **licks** us" because when two nouns are separated by "or" they are treated as singular nouns. I believe in English 'queratina' is spelled 'keratin'. Also, "As if it were a spoon" :) - PumpkinCalabaza, Mar 9, 2013
"However, unlike the dog's completely smooth tongue, the cat's tongue is rough, rugged, and even a little hard to the touch...inevitably, one wonders of the purpose of such a rough texture." (this sentence is confusing and unnecessary) - cola_jet_set, Mar 9, 2013
