saludar ( sah-loo-dahr' )

verb ( to greet, to say hello )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Cuando fuimos al zoológico, el oso parecía saludarnos.

When we went to the zoo, it seemed like the bear was saying hello to us.

2. Luisa estaba molesta porque Heriberto no la saludó en la fiesta.

Luisa was upset because Heriberto did not greet her at the party.

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

En mi pais el costumbre de saludar a alguien con besos en las mejillas está creciendo entre las chicas, pero es más normal para los chicos saludarse con un abrazo

In my country the custom of greeting someone with a kisses on the cheeks is growing amongst girls , but it's more normal for young men to greet each other with a hug.

Hay muchas maneras de saludar y esto depende del lugar y de las circunstancias en que nos encontremos. El apretón de manos, dos besos, un abrazo, etc. En función de la situación y de la persona a quien estemos saludando, escogemos una u otra manera de saludar. El saludo depende también de la cultura del país, de si los que intervienen son hombres o mujeres, etc. En síntesis al saludar hay que tener en cuenta: el destinatario, la situación, pero sobretodo, debemos mantener el contacto visual y la sonrisa.

There are many manners to greet and this depends on the place and circumstances in which we are. The handshake, two kisses, a hug, etc. According to the situation and and the person we are greeting with, we choose one or another manner to greet. The greeting also depends on the culture of each country, the sex of the person, etc. In synthesis, when greeting we should keep in mind: the recipient, situation, but mainly, we should maintain visual contact and smile. enter image description here

An interesting note to eye contact and smiles - in some cultures a smile can denote embarrassment. In some African cultures, direct eye contact, especially with an elder is extremely rude. I.e. - A student should not make eye contact with their teacher. - katydew, Mar 8, 2013

Me gusta la costumbre que tienen muchos pueblos pequeños, porque todos saludan a cualquier que pase por la calle. I like the small town custom of greeting anyone who passes by.

No te soprendas si viajas a un país de América del Sur, y te saludan con un beso en la mejilla. Es perfectamente normal. Don't be surprised if you travel to a South American country, and they greet you with a kiss on the cheek. It's perfectly normal.
