tuve muy sueño

This doesn´t usually start and end in a defined period of time, so "Tenía mucho sueño" would be appropriate....... "I was very sleepy."

I was tired ...... estaba cansado(a)

You are probably trying to say "Tuve mucho sueño" What you said would translate to "I had very sleepiness" and the correct way to say it is "I had a lot of sleepiness" I hope that makes sense.
