The Big Picture

The Big Picture

Hi all,

I'm trying to think of a phrase or to that convey the same feeling as English's

In the grand scheme of things....

or

In the big picture...

Any ideas better than me just talking literally?

thanks roger

Poner en perspectiva can be used to mean what you want to say:

No te encasilles, pon las cosas en perspectiva y podrás saber lo hay que hacer.

Una visión general

VIsión a gran escala

Perspectiva general

Gran escenario de las cosas

En el gran esquema de las cosas

Thanks Franco. En el gran esquema... me gusta. Casi como en inglés - rogspax, May 30, 2013

Indeed, perhaps one might combine a few elements to yield, say: "El gran esquema de este mundo".

The following is a sample of the gobblydegook, end-to-end clichés, and bad English and style that are nowadays centered around some putative "BIG PICTURE". Has been slightly edited to protect the guilty:

"Being capable of seeing the “big picture” is a key skill for any emerging or existing leader, and the capacity to connect concepts and see beyond immediate constraints the essence of both professional and personal success. Having spent some time transitioning to a more flexible schedule and workshifting culture, never before have I been more challenged to juggle multiple tasks, schedules and client and personal demands. The world “shifted” – of that I am certain! Transitioning from tunnel vision to the open windows of the workshiftng world, I have been challenged to find alternative ways of approaching almost every opportunity and responsibility placed before me."

Say what?

That "almost" is where the trap door opens. An excellent illustration of ni siquiera cercano y ningun cigarro.

yikes, that´s truly horrible. The ¨almost¨ is hilarious. - rogspax, May 30, 2013

In US English, "the Big Picture" has clear associations with advertising and Public Relations (where it is a cliché), as well as with the well known (and very propagandistic) film series made by the US Army Signal Corps, and running from 1951-1963.

Carpentier's El reino de este mundo has the same feel, mutatis mutandis, as the "grand scheme of things."

"The big picture" is something quite distinct and lesser in connotation.
