What is the word for "braces" in spanish?

I have used "frenos" or "los frenos" for as the spanish word for braces (ie orthodontic appliances), but as I read a couple of the flash cards, both used the word "tirantes".for orthodontic appliances. Is this a term used in other regions or just incorrect flash cards?

I believe this is regional usage. In Mexico "frenos" is used for teeth "braces" as well as vehicle brakes and "tirantes" for "suspenders" (of trousers). Both words basically mean something that detains movement, so the regionalism is understandable.

Do you know if that is in reference to a removable appliance, for example a retainer? - 2wired, Mar 1, 2013
Maybe that's just an aparatito? - annierats, Mar 1, 2013
Actually, I read it in Clara Sanches: Ultimas noticias del paraíso, I think it refers to any type. . - annierats, Mar 1, 2013
I did not read Clara Sanches yet. - 0080b918, Mar 1, 2013

My kids used the word "brackets" in Spain. "Mi amiga tiene brackets!"

I was in Nicaragua and asked a gal with braces on what she called them - "Frenillos". So while they are "Frenos" in Mexico, they are Frenillos in Nicaragua.
