el techo ( teh'-choh )

noun ( roof )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. La casa tenía el techo inclinado y estaba cubierto de tejas de madera.

The house had an inclined roof and it was covered in wooden shingles.

2. Bajo el techo de un nuevo hogar, Claudia y Ramón se enfocan en su amor y en sus deseos por empezar una familia.

Under the roof of a new home, Claudia and Ramón focus on their love and on their desire to start a family.

Notes

The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on February 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Me gusta mucho un techo que es que está hecho de hierro corrugado ,

I agree with you, I love sleeping and listening to the rain on the roof. - rac1, Feb 27, 2013
Ray, you could say Me gusta mucho un techo hecho de hierro corrugado. If you want to put the verb in though, in this case it would be que está instead of que es. - sinmeta, Feb 27, 2013
I find it very soothing at night rac. - ray76, Feb 27, 2013
@sinmeta, Thank you , if I read it right , " que es " is not only wrong , but superfluous , is that correct ? I have changed it to mirror that idea. - ray76, Feb 27, 2013
It may be superfluous, but we all say superfluous things all the time! :-) - sinmeta, Feb 27, 2013
Hello Ray. - iana01, Feb 27, 2013

Ayer mi esposa y yo fuimos al museo LeMay de autos en Tacoma. Tienen cientos de carros y motos bajo un techo. Es un poco caro para entrar, pero en mi opinion vale la pena.

Yesterday my wife and I went to the LeMay auto museum in Tacoma. They have hundreds of cars and motorcycles under one roof. It's a little expensive, but in my opinion, it's worth it.

Thanks for all the comments. I didn't really think I would be able to convince anyone to check on top of the roof. :D - GraceM, Feb 28, 2013
I guess if they didn't know what was really out there, they'd check, if only for a moment... a moment of terror, that is. - katydew, Feb 28, 2013

Después de ser pintado el interior de nuestra casa, unas gotas de pintura mojada cayeron del techo al suelo. Mancharon la madera de modo que luego la tuvimos que pulir de nuevo.

After the inside of our house was painted, some drops of wet paint fell from the ceiling onto the floor. They stained the wood in such a way that we then had to polish it all over again.

That must have been fun, a real joy! jeje - rac1, Feb 27, 2013
Ah - ceiling and roof are the same word in Spanish! - that's a bit confusing for Anglophones - Ansionnach, Feb 27, 2013
Ansionnach, there's another word for roof in Spanish that I think is just as commonly used as techo, and that's tejado. It also makes it easier to distinguish. - sinmeta, Feb 27, 2013
You're right BigMike, thanks. - sinmeta, Feb 27, 2013
