You can also use the conjugation tool on the blue toolbar at the top of the SD page.
It gives the verb forms that you will need. You can type in an English word in the translator, then when you get your Spanish verb equivalent, you can type that into the conjugation tool.
In the Spanish grammar section under "learn" that is in the toolbar, you can find a section on pronouns and subject nouns. With a subject and a verb, you can make your first simple sentence in Spanish. (Btw - the simple past is called the preterit in Spanish).
Take Ian's advice and listen again to the first lessons on this site. They are fast lessons, about 10 minutes each, or you can find some helps under the Spanish Grammar section that are quick reads.
The imperfect is used for actions started in the past and have not been completed (not perfected).or do not have a definite end or refer to time in general in the past or are habitually repeated. The imperfect is triggered by phrases lke amenudo, cada casi nunca.....
