lamentablemente (lah-mehn-tah'-bleh-mehn-teh)

adverb ( unfortunately, regrettably )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Lamentablemente, cuando llegamos a la playa había empezado a llover.

Unfortunately, when we got to the beach it had started to rain.

2. Lamentablemente, cuando Claudia llegó al viñedo, Eduardo estaba encamado, sin muchos ánimos de seguir luchando.

Regrettably, when Claudia got to the vineyard, Eduardo was bedridden, with not much of a will to continue fighting.

Notes

The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on February 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Lamentablemente, no es cierto que la edad trae traiga la sabiduría.

Sólo los sabios tendrán la sabiduría.

La mayoría de nosotros tiene que usar el sentido común.

Lamentably , it is not true that age brings wisdom .

Only the wise will have wisdom.

Most of us have to use common sense.

Katydew, thnx for this entry. I'm using it as an example sentence in my saved vocabulary. I researched the expression cada cierto tiempo. It's the correct translation for the English every so often (also: cada tanto), but solo should be **sólo. - Jubilado, Feb 21, 2013

You could also say "de vez en cuando" or "de vez en vez", which both mean once in a while or from time to time. - sinmeta, Feb 21, 2013

Lamentablemente nuestra sociedad pone demasiado énfasis en los aspectos de los pueblos y no lo suficiente en el carácter de los pueblos.

Unfortunately our society places too much emphasis on people's appearances and not enough emphasis on people's character.

I first heard the word "lamentablemente" in a song by Juanes. I thought that the sound of this word perfectly expressed its meaning - it sounded like the wind in the willows, soft and sad. Of course, Juanes' voice might have helped things. Unfortunately I'll probably never meet him to ask him what he thinks.

Oí la palabra "lamentablemente" la primera vez en una canción de Juanes. Pensé entonces que el sonido de esta palabra expresa su significado perfectamente - suena como el viento en los sauces, tranquilo y triste. Naturalmente, la voz de Juanes quizá ayudó. Lamentablemente, probablemente no lo voy a ver para preguntar que piensa.
