Is cállate offensive?
I know that cállate is a translation of "shut up" in English, but is this word offensive? In the US, many times young children are told by adults that this is a bad word and not to say it. Is this the same in Spanish? I don't want to offend anyone if I say it.

It is a bit abrupt, but not really offensive, as long as you really are on a "tu" basis with the person you're addressing. It's better than ¡Cierra la boca! - but there are more respectful ways to make the same request.
To ask someone to stop talking, would try somnething a little more safe like " Uno memento, por favor" or "perdón"
