Surprizing for its length here in the midwest of the USA often people say "waste paper basket" sometimes I hear trash bin, but the former is much more common. I hope this helps!
In the kitchen also people say "trash can" or "garbage can". Technically "garbage" is food waste rather than paper or plastic waste. Because kitchen waste can contain food matter, one does not often refer to the trash container in the kitchen as the "waste paper basket". People talk around the subject too (perhaps "trash can" seems too impolite) and say things Iike, "Where can I dispose of this? (throw this away?)"

In England we say rubbish bin.
A waste paper basket here, is in the study , or the bedroom for discarded tissues and papers. Old Valentine cards and the like.

Here in the good ol' US of A, I would wager "trash can" or simply "trash" (depending on context of course) works quite nicely...a few others though compost heap wouldn't be attractive in one's kitchen, Dumpster is prohibitive on size alone and skip I am reading for the first time!
Most of my friends and acquaintances just say "garbage", as in "Where's the garbage?" when they want to throw something away, or more often "Peter, didn't you take out the garbage yet?"
