internar ( een-tehr-nahr' )

verb ( to confine )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Al preso lo confinaron a su celda por haber empezado una pelea.

They confined the inmate to his cell for having started a fight.

2. Eduardo decidió irse a Buenos Aires a trabajar en el viñedo de la madre de Claudia. Así evitaría que lo internaran en un hospital hasta su muerte.

Eduardo decided to go to Buenos Aires to work on Claudia's mother's vineyard. In this way, he'd avoid being confined to a hospital until his death. enter image description here

Notes

The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on February 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Few things may be more touching or stressful for friends and relatives that seeing a dear being suffering from a mental disease. For people who suffer from a serious mental disease, sometimes the only method of treatment implies (involves) the hospitality attention in a mental health center, but sometimes the patients are too ill for realizing they need help. Using legal methods to confine a person in a mental health center is called "voluntary confinement" and it is a extreme measure that may violate his constitutional rights.

Luisssito, lo que ha escrito Ud. me da mucha gracia. De hecho, yo era abogado para pacientes mentales durante varios años. Los representaba en procedimientos jurídicos que se trataban del confinamiento involuntario en centros psiquiátricos. - sinmeta, Feb 12, 2013

I have some questions: can´t I use the word "disease" in this context? In the third line is "the word method" incorrect, so you use "course"? Thanks - luisssito, Feb 12, 2013
... context than "method". They're both grammatically correct, but usually we say "course of treatment". "Method of treatment" is rarely used. - sinmeta, Feb 12, 2013
Yes, you can use the word "disease", I just used the word "illness" because it's the word that is more commonly used in the context of mental infirmities. Same with "method of treatment" and "course of treatment" - "course" is more common in this ... - sinmeta, Feb 12, 2013

Durante algunos días en el invierno, me aburre estar internada en la casa por la nieve y el hielo. No obstante, sí disfruto de aprovechar la oportunidad para leer un buen libro y cocinar una sopa.

During some days in the winter, I get bored being confined to the house because of the snow and the ice. However, I do enjoy taking the opportunity to read a good book and cook some soup.

I have a feeling "internar" is supposed to be used in a more serious way than I used it. I'm not sure though. - GraceM, Feb 12, 2013
Oh, and I didn't use it as a verb. I'm having trouble today! - GraceM, Feb 12, 2013

Good they can still read that sign - is that "sí " in "sí disfruto" for emphasis? - Ansionnach, Feb 12, 2013
Great one, Grace. I wish I could enjoy some side effects of winter more. - mcl020, Feb 12, 2013
Yes, it's for emphasis, Ansionnach. Maybe I used it incorrectly. - GraceM, Feb 13, 2013

I think in this context, you would say Siempre me limito a tres galletas a la vez. But then again, that wouldn't count as the word of the day! :-) - sinmeta, Feb 12, 2013

Con frecuencia manejo motos porque no quería internarme al dentro un coche. Pero hay personas que hacen los dos al mismo tiempo.

I often ride a bikes because I don´t like to inter myself in a cage, but there are people who do both at the same time.

Note, ´cage´ is common motorcyclist slang for a car.

Too many people confine their exercise to jumping to conclusions, running up bills, stretching the truth, bending over backward, lying down on the job, sidestepping responsibility and pushing their luck. Demasiadas personas internarian su ejercicio a sacar conclusiones precipitadas, correr(funcionar) cuentas(proyectos de la ley, billetes de banco), estiramiento de la verdad, inclinación hacia atrás, acostarse en el trabajo, esquivar la responsabilidad y empujar su suerte.

Mi mayor temor es estar confinado en un asilo para ancianos.

Que es la razón viajo a países que son un poco peligroso.

My greatest fear is to be confined in a nursing home.

That is why I travel to countries that are a little dangerous .
