el signo ( seeg'-noh )

noun ( sign, mark, symbol )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Muchas personas creen que su signo zodiacal explica elementos de su personalidad.

Many people believe that their Zodiac sign explains elements of their personality.

2. Eduardo vio el rechazo de Claudia y su enfermedad como un signo. Era la hora para vivir sus sueños, el cual, en su caso, era vivir en un viñedo.

Eduardo saw Claudia's rejection and his sickness as a sign. It was time for him to live his dream, which, in his case, was to live on a vineyard. enter image description here

Notes

The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on February 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

"Yellow roses mean joy and friendship, while red roses symbolize love and beauty which is the most precious feeling on the world." "While" in this case is a subordinating conjunction. "Symbolize" means "is a symbol for" - PeterRS, Feb 11, 2013
and "World" should not be capitalized. Also the first sentence should be "White roses are a symbol..." - PeterRS, Feb 11, 2013

Cuando yo era estudiante en la secundaria, me interesaba mucho la matemática. Hice clases del álgebra, la trigonometría y el cálculo. Al graduarme, conocía tantos signos matemáticos, más de la cuenta. Ya se me han olvidado casi todos.

When I was a high school student, I was very interested in math. I took classes in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. When I graduated, I knew so many mathematical signs, more than enough. Now I've forgotten almost all of them.

Pobre Ryan encontró este signo sutil delante de su casa, cuando volvió a casa después de "trabajar tarde" otra vez.

Poor Ryan found this subtle sign in front of his house, when he returned home from 'working late' again.

Este es signo que este pájaro es ignorante o tal vez sabe más de lo que creo.

I'm pretty sure it's más DE lo que creo. But if we have anyone who knows for sure, including any native Spanish speakers who can chime in here, it would be helpful. Poor bird! :-( - sinmeta, Feb 11, 2013
Thanks, sinmeta. I sometimes see "más de" in places that I don't understand. I know "más DE" is necessary when a number follows it, but I don't understand its use in sentences like this. I'm sure you're right, though, and I'll change it. - GraceM, Feb 11, 2013
I agree with you Grace. I don´t know a rule I can cite that says it should be ¨más de¨ in your example. I´m just going on my own experience hearing the spoken language. But I could be wrong and I´m open to being corrected as well. - sinmeta, Feb 11, 2013
Smart bird, dumb croc. lol - rac1, Feb 11, 2013
Esto es un signo que este pájaro es ignorante o tal vez sabe más de lo que creo. - luisssito, Feb 12, 2013
You use "más de" when talking about something that results more than you expected or you believe. In your sentence you believe (you suppose) the bird is ignorant, but "MAYBE" the bird knows more than you think. - luisssito, Feb 12, 2013

Si has leído el signo bien, no tienes que preocuparte, a menos sabrás que típo de golpe vas a sufrir.

If you've read the sign properly , you don't have to worry, you will at least know what is about to hit you.
