resignar ( rreh-seeg-nahr' )

verb ( to resign, to relinquish )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

Sinmeta will be correcting the Spanish sentences as his time permits. We still need more help with this very important task. Please correct your sentences according to his suggestions.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Cuando el alcalde admitió que había aceptado sobornos, tuvo que resignar su puesto inmediatamente.

When the mayor confessed that he had accepted bribes, he had to resign his post immediately.

2. Ya Eduardo se había resignado a su destino, pero no se atrevía a decirle a Claudia lo mal que estaba. No quería que ella volviera con él por pena.

Eduardo had already resigned himself to his fate, but he didn't dare tell Claudia how sick he was. He didn't want her to return to him out of pity. enter image description here

Notes

The 2nd example sentence is part of our Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on February 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Puesto que mañana va a nevar muchísimo (se pronostica que habrá más de diez pulgadas de nieve en nuestra vecindad), me resigno a quedarme todo el día en la casa sin salir.

Since it's going to snow a lot tomorrow (the forecast is for more than ten inches of snow in our area), I'm resigning myself to staying in the house all day without going out.

Good idea amigo..I used to live up North around all that snow and ice. - rac1, Feb 8, 2013

Voy a resignar mi posición lo más pronto posible y moverme a una nueva ubicación...o tal vez debería tenerme en pie y dar rostro a la realidad.

I'm going to resign my position as soon as possible and move to a new location, or maybe I should keep my feet on the ground and face reality.

Your profile says you´re a Spanish beginner. You should update that to advanced! :-) - sinmeta, Feb 8, 2013
Wow, I'd never have thought of Grace as a beginner. She's definitely qualified to completely skip intermediate, but suspect she's a champion of modesty and unlikely too. I consider her a great help and example. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
And god yes does reality get in the way. If I could somehow keep my business running here, I'd take at least a year off and go study and race in Mexico. I actually have offers to do so, but am not in a position to do so. Stupid reality. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013

El gran campeón de ajedrez tuvo que resignar el juego cuando era obvio que iba a ser un jaque mate en tres pasos.

The great chess champion had to resign the game when it was obvious that it was going to be checkmate in three moves.

Garry Kasperov. - Noetol, Feb 8, 2013
I believe that in a case of a chess match would not be correct to use that word. I believe that the correct word in your sentence should be "abandonar" - Yeiyei, Feb 8, 2013
Thanks for teaching me how to say check mate in Spanish! - sinmeta, Feb 8, 2013
I have met him once. And after he had won a tournament over here in Amsterdam, he walked away from the building (over the flower market here) with the envelope (of money?) in his backpocket. Great player!! - mcl020, Feb 8, 2013
Most of them know whole libraries of games/possible moves and their possible outcomes by heart. - mcl020, Feb 8, 2013
Kasparov (2 As, no E - though it doesn't matter much since it was a russianized version of his 2nd surname converted from, I can't recall which, either azerbijanian (sp?) or armenian, then converted to roman alphabet,, so it's quibbling) was super intense - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
Much quicker than Karpov, and at least less eccentric than Fischer. Top chess guys tend to be weird. My best friend as a kid got up into the top 5 in Chicago and IL, and though way below this level, was already looking 8-10 moves ahead. Amazing minds. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
Yenkel - I don't knoe for sure in Spanish, but the English word is to "resign" the game. i'll have to research more. Thanks! :)) - Noetol, Feb 8, 2013
Hey Noetol, I have a suggestion "........tuvo que resignarse a perder el juego cuando era obvio....." In this case the player does not have any other option that accept his defeat. - luisssito, Feb 8, 2013
Even you might use other words, but the word of the day is "resignar" :) - luisssito, Feb 8, 2013

Totally agree. Was once in a pair of races with a broken hand as was only aiming for about 10th, since it´s really hard to race a motorcycle with one hand. The first of the two, I got ninth, as was quite happy. Then, the 2nd race got going... - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
I had figured out how to work around the bad hand a bit, and accidentally got up into 5th. Then the people ahead of my started making dumb mistakes, and it turned out that I won the race. A complete fluke, but possible only due to not giving up. Pays off - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
And two thumbs up on choosing the Charlie Brown comic. Classic. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013

Can you do a full season on just one motor? - Noetol, Feb 8, 2013
This sort of motor, which we build for endurance racing (2-8hours) in a mild state of tune, should last the full 10 rounds, now through Oct. In higher tune for shorter races, one year also, but it´s only 10 races of 15-20 min they have to last. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
Are the valves foreign made? - 0095ca4c, Feb 8, 2013
Motor should be a two weeks build time (evenings) for a Very thorough and precise one., but, some needed parts, the valves, have been on back-order for over a month, so we´re in a bit of trouble. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
Roger, I see one correction - I'm pretty sure it should be Estamos resignados. And vieja instead of viaja, but I know that's just a typo. - sinmeta, Feb 8, 2013
Good luck, I hope you get the valves in time! - sinmeta, Feb 8, 2013
Margerita, Yes, foreign, as in Japanese, from Kawasaki. The rules in this class, which is a relatively inexpensive one, require stock original valves and cams, so we can´t legally source elsewhere. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
Oops, forgot on the H in your name. Sorry! Anyway, the good news is we have a back up bike, and it´s one my teammate is very fast on. I´m not though, so I´m just going to have to behave and not chuck it into the scenery. - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
Sinmeta, thanks for the correction. Yes, I shouldn´t have said somos resignados (we´re not, normally) so thanks for correcting me. I expanded my entry for more practice. Anyone care to doublecheck the new version? Thanks! - rogspax, Feb 8, 2013
With an 'h' or without an 'h' makes no difference to me. I always sign Mag cuz it's so much shorter. :-) - 0095ca4c, Feb 8, 2013

Margherite, I think in your sentence, since his resignation being a surprise was a one-time thing, the pretérito would be more fitting than the imperfecto de indicative, así que sería: no fue una gran sorpresa. ¿Qué te parece? - sinmeta, Feb 8, 2013
