What does diptongo mean?

A diptongo, or diphthong in English, is when two vowels are pronounced together in the same syllable.
In Spanish, a diptongo happens when one weak vowel and one strong vowel are next to each other in a word.
The strong vowels are: a, e, o
The weak vowels are: i, u
A diphthong = weak vowel + strong vowel (ia, ie, io, ua, ue, uo) or strong vowel + weak vowel (ai, au, ei, eu, oi, ou)
In Spanish, when two strong vowels are together, it is not considered a diptongo because they are not pronounced as one syllable. Instead, it is called a hiato (pronounced like yato), or a hiatus in English.
Also, when a weak vowel has an accent mark over it (í or ú), it becomes a strong vowel. So a combination like "ía" would not be a diptongo, but rather a hiato because both vowels are strong (and therefore are not pronounced as a single syllable).
Dipthong in English. A combination of two vowels pronounced as one. In Spanish, they generally happen when U or I are combined with a strong vowel (A E O).
For example, Bueno. the ue is one vowel and sound.
hope that helps.
