choose correct adverbs

I´ve to choose correct adverb in the following statements. Now I am confused which one to choose where and why. for e.g late and lately both are adverbs but in 1st statement lately is correct but in 2nd late is correct. Pls help me to learn how to pick an adverb. Thanks

1) I´ve been so busy late/lately that I´ve hard/hardly had time to send any emails to anyone, but it was great to hear from you. I haven´t got much news really except that the other night Tina and I managed to get into a Mana concert free/freely!

2) The University told me that I would be registered for the course automatic/automatically as soon as they received my money, but unfortunately my letter with the cheque arrived late/lately. Now they say they´ll put me on a waiting list but its high/highly unlikely.

I´ve been so busy lately that I´ve hardly had time to send any emails to anyone....I managed to get into a Mana concert free!

...I would be registered for the course automatically as soon as they received my money, .... they´ll put me on a waiting list but its highly unlikely.

Hi, Reema.

Could you give us your attempt first and then we can help you correct them or confirm that they are correct?

The first one is 1) I´ve been so busy lately.....

  • Late can used as an adjective and as an adverb.

  • Lately has a totally different meaning - it means recently.

  • Hard is an adjective. It can mean solid, industrious, or difficult.

  • Hardly is an adverb and means only just or certainly not.
