duro ( doo'-roh )

adjective ( hard )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

How to post a picture

Examples:

1. Dejé el pan afuera anoche y ahora está duro como una roca.

I left the bread uncovered last night and now it's hard as a rock.

2. Hay que trabajar duro para ser competitivo en este mercado laboral.

You have to work hard to be competitive in this job market.

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

Rac, should it be "tan duro como una roca" - padrin, Jan 28, 2013
The SD gives this as an idiom "más duro que una piedra" - but it is missing the translation - good word Rac1 - Ansionnach, Jan 28, 2013

duro and hungry can mean the same thing? - ladawki143, Jan 28, 2013
@ladawki: no, duro and hungry are not at all the same: but you can almost never translate an idiom directly into another language. - mcl020, Jan 28, 2013

Para enseñar a los demás, primero has de hacer tú algo muy duro: has de enderezarte a ti mismo. (Buda)

To teach other people, first, you have to make hard work: you hace to straighten yourself.

(sorry the bad traslation, I'm traying to learn)

"work very hard"......"you have to"..... You're doing great! - rac1, Jan 28, 2013
You got my vote for teaching me more Spanish. Your Spanish sentence is quite hard, but I want to learn the language. I will look in my huge dictionary and it may give me a sentence using "enderezar" - 00a50c57, Jan 28, 2013

The diamond is the hardest natural material. Sometimes it is call 'the king of the gemstones'. It is so hard that it is the only thing that is able to cut glass. Diamonds are no longer used only in jewellery. Nowadays you can also see a diamond car, a golf or a football ball, or even chess figures with diamonds.

El diamante es el material natural más duro. A veces se llama 'el rey de las gemas'. Es tan duro que es la única cosa que puede cortar el vidrio. Los diamantes ya no se utilizan solamente en joyería. Hoy en día se puede ver también un coche de diamante, una pelota de golf o de fútbol o hasta figuras de ajedrez con diamantes.

Love this picture too. Adversity is painful, but out of it beauty blossoms sometimes in the form of poetry, sometimes reflected in the sad haunting melodies of music. - 00a50c57, Jan 28, 2013
It is possible, albeit preferable, to sing a joyful song in right in the midst of sadness. - JoyceM, Jan 28, 2013

I knew our marriage would be hard when we singed each other with the unity candles. Yo sabía que nuestro matrimonio sería duro cuando nos chamuscamos mutuamente con las velas de la unidad.

You really wear 'em down, don't you! :) - Noetol, Jan 28, 2013
Don't they come like that for racing, or no" - rac1, Jan 28, 2013
We do tear them up. Sometimes a tire will last as little as one race $400 gone in 15 minutes. Personally, I don't use those types. WaY too rich for my blood, and budget. - rogspax, Jan 28, 2013
And rac, they start out smooth, or with normal grooves, but generate so much heat in use, that the rubber melts, and is partially redeposited as the tire rolls. One can read a lot about the suspension's performance from these patterns. - rogspax, Jan 28, 2013
