la cueva ( koo-eh'-vah )

noun ( cave )

We are looking for an official corrector for the Spanish sentences. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Estamos buscando un corrector oficial de las frases en español. Si usted está interesado, por favor envíeme un PM.

There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Los osos hibernan en cuevas durante el invierno y reaparecen en la primavera.

Bears hibernate in caves in the winter and reappear in the spring.

2. La cueva de las Manos en Argentina es un sitio arqueológico muy importante.

The Cave of the Hands in Argentina is a very important archeological site.

Please Note:

Until we have an official Spanish corrector, please help with any suggestions to the Spanish sentences as you are able. It is very much appreciated. Thank you all for being here at SD and for participating in La Palabra Del Dia!

There are three Aragonite Caves in the world. Two of them are in Mexico and the third one, called Ochtinská Aragonite Cave, is in Slovakia. This cave is included in the Unesco World Heritage list. Despite the fact that Slovakia is a very small country, there are 6200 different caves there. However, only 12 of them are open to the public.

Cuando era en mis veintes, solía hacer senderismo en las cuevas: la espeleología.

When I was in my twenties, I used to go hiking in caves: spelunking.

Not me, but could have been me. I still have the helmet and carbide lamp.

enter image description here We used to see formations like this. I think I was a strange chick. Cool, but strange.

Oh, come on Annie, there are great commercial caves where you sit in a boat and float through beautifully lit caves, like Senaca Caverns in upstate New York. Or, walk through Crystal Caves here in eastern Pennsylvania. - JoyceM, Jan 27, 2013
Not everyone has to crawl through on their stomachs with two feet of headroom. :) Only the truly adventurous. - JoyceM, Jan 27, 2013

because living in caves is pleasing *to the* bats. That's how you have to say that in Spanish. Look up the verb "gustar" on this site or the internet to find out more about it :) - PumpkinCalabaza, Jan 26, 2013
Ok yes of course - should have realised that - thanks! - Ansionnach, Jan 27, 2013

Una pequeña homínido encontrado en una cueva en la isla de flores Indonesia.

A tiny hominid found in a cave, on the Island of Flores in Indonesia.

           ----------------

The Discovery of Homo floresiensis

On Saturday, September 6, 2003, Indonesian archeologist Wahyu Saptomo was overseeing the excavation of Sector VII at Liang Bua. Benyamin Tarus, one of the locally hired workers, was excavating the 2 x 2 meter square when all of a sudden the top of a skull began to reveal itself. Six meters beneath the surface of the cave, Wahyu immediately joined Benyamin and the two of them slowly and carefully removed some more sediment from around the top of the skull. Wahyu then asked Indonesian faunal expert Rokus Due Awe to inspect the excavated portion of the skull. Rokus told Wahyu that the skull definitely belonged to a hominin and most likely that of a small child given the size of its braincase. Two days later, the team returned to the site and Thomas Sutikna, the Indonesian archeologist in charge of the excavations, joined Wahyu at the bottom of the square. After several days, enough of the cranium and mandible had been exposed for Rokus to realize that this was no small child; instead, all of its teeth were permanent meaning that this was a fully grown adult. A few weeks later, the team had recovered the rest of this hominin's partial skeleton, the likes of which had never been discovered before. Today, this specimen is referred to as LB1 (Liang Bua 1), and is the holotype specimen for the species Homo floresiensis.

you know the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite. They occur in limestone caves. The stalactite is above, and hangs downward like an icicle; the stalagmite is below and sticks up - readytodictate, Jan 28, 2013

Deep inside her soul, there is a dark cave
Where lies sleeping, the beast of her womanhood;
Waiting to be awakened, and fed with the blood
Of her own innocence, it's the angelic child's grave.

En el fondo de su alma, hay una cueva oscura
donde está durmiendo, la bestia de su feminidad;
esperando que la despierte y le dé de comer
con la sangre, de su propia inocencia.
