A finales del año o a finales de año?

Estoy haciendo la tesis y creo que la voy a terminar a finales de año.
This sentence is from my book. But I wonder why it´s not a finales deL año. why not del?

I believe "de año" is correct too. Personally I prefer "del," but I find no problem with either phrase.
