A specific por vs para ?

Question

OK. It seems our new grammar text and workbook has a small review section in each chapter. This week's seems to be our old friends, por y para.

Of the 30 exercises, one sees me not understanding the sentence, so I can't really even get to deciding the preposition. The fill in the blank sentence is as follows:

Rosa cambió el estéreo <por/para> el reproductor de MP3.

I'm not sure if it means

1) she quit using her stereo and now only uses her MP3 player,

or

2) if it means that she turned the selector switch on her stereo to the MP3 players input (vs say, the tuner or DVD etc.)

What do you all think the sentence is supposed to mean?

I'd guess if the former, then Por, and if the latter, I'm unsure, but think Pass.

Yes, and thanks. My real problem is that I didn´t know what the sentence was supposed to mean, and so couldn´t begin to choose the preposition. I suppose it was a general comprehension problem more than a por vs para one, and I somewhat mis-titled it. - rogspax, Jan 24, 2013

I agree with Kiwi-Girl. I think the sentence is trying to say that Rosa exchanged her stereo for an MP3 player. Since it is an exchange, you would use por.

I'd definitely go with por, given that cambiar means to change, exchange or swap.
