Sometimes "que" pops up and I just don't know why. Aprieta el paso que ya estamos tarde. - Pick up the pace, we are already late.

Why is "que" there?

I tried to post an answer but got blocked by a 15 minute wait warning. Anyway good question! I think in your example it's short for "porque" - Jubilado, Jan 13, 2013
15 minute wait?? - rac1, Jan 13, 2013
Are you sure it wasn't a 15 second wait, Jubilado? There is a 15 second wait between posts. - katydew, Jan 13, 2013
Yes it probably was 15 seconds, but it's all moot, PumpkinCalabaza confirmed what I was going to suggest. - Jubilado, Jan 14, 2013

In your example, as Jubilado mentioned, "que" is short for the word "porque" meaning because. This is common in colloquial Spanish; it's like saying "cause" instead of "because" in English.
