How do you say "exchanging phone messages" in Spanish?

I'm dealing with mostly Latin American Spanish-speakers, but would appreciate, if there's an Iberian version of the phrase, to get that too. And is there an idiom in Spanish for "playing phone tag"? Thanks in advance.

Intercambiar mensajes de texto should work universally (I speak Latin American Spanish).

Playing phone tag ... I say: Jugar al gato y al ratón. But more formally, you can say:

Nunca coincidimos en el teléfono.

Llamarnos a destiempo.
