It is the 'was getting married' part I'm stuck on!

Se quedó allí por un mes porque su prima/primo se estaba casando or se iba a casar.

"Por" isn´t necessary and "se estaba casando" would indicate that this wedding was taking place during the entire month. Without these words, it´s perfect.
