The final English E and its effect on pronunciation

The final English E and its effect on pronunciation

13
votes

The final E on English words is usually not enunciated.

The idea here is to find words where a final E changes the pronunciation and then show examples in English and a Spanish translation.

La E final de palabras en inglés no suele ser enunciado.

La idea aquí es encontrar las palabras en las que una e final cambie la pronunciación y luego mostrar ejemplos en Inglés y una traducción al español.

Please correct my Spanish.

Examples:

orange pip - pepita de naranja

pipe cleaner - limpiapipas

Ian ... you have a typo on your heading. It should be effect. - francobollo, Jan 5, 2013

Gracias Franco - It looks like I made a mistake that I should not have with "affect - effect". - ian-hill, Jan 5, 2013
To help learners of English "affect" is a verb and "effect" is a noun. - ian-hill, Jan 5, 2013
Effect can also be a verb meaning to cause (something) to happen; bring about. - francobollo, Jan 5, 2013
That is true Franco but affect can never be a noun - finally I got there ha ha - ian-hill, Jan 6, 2013
Actually, affect can be a noun also. It is the response to some stimulus. An emotion or mood. Pronounced AFFect instead of affECT. - murkilator, Jan 6, 2013

That pronounciation of a word ending with an "e" is sort of a rule in English and there must thousands, perhaps more of them.

gap - gape la brecha - mirar boquiabiertos

Words where the affected vowel is "e" is a bit more of a challenge met - mete the preterite conjugation of encontrar - quizás prorratear

rip - ripe rasgar - maduro

cut - cute cortar o corte - bonita/o o linda/o

rap - no I am not going to go there.

"A sort of rule" is correct. Many native English speakers are not aware of it unless they learned "phonetic" reading when small. English pronunciation rules tend to fall short when trying to apply them! - Jubilado, Jan 7, 2013
