When we add "ance" to many verbs, some verbs are changed to a noun or adjective.

Verb Suffix Noun/Adjective
accept + ance acceptance
inherit + ance inheritance
perform + ance performance


Add “ance”, when the root ends in hard “c” or “g”.

Verb Suffix Noun/Adjective
elegant + ance elegance
signify +ance significance
Exceptions:
+ ance allegiance
+ ance vengeance


Change a root ending in a "y", preceded by a consonant, to an "i", before adding "ance".

ally + ance alliance
defy + ance defiance
rely + ance reliance
vary + ance variance


A root ending in a "y", preceded by a vowel, retain the "y" and then add "ance".

convey + ance conveyance
clairvoyant + ance clairvoyance


When the root verb begins with an "a", add "ance".

avoid + ance avoidance
assist + ance assistance
annoy + ance annoyance
+ ance advance


Many adjectives which end in "ant" become abstract nouns by changing the "t" to "ce".

brilliant + ce brilliance
distant + ce distance
fragrant + ce fragrance
important + ce importance


Root verbs ending in "ear" and "ure" add "ance" to form nouns.

clear + ance clearance
forbear + ance forbearance
appear + ance appearance
assure + ance assurance
endure + ance endurance


Drop the final "e" before adding the suffix "ance".
