In Holland people stuff themselves with 'oliebollen and appelflappen', usually watch television (on which there are lots of comedians reflecting upon the past year) and then shortly before 00.00 they throw away million of euros spent on noisy, stinking, dangerous fireworks (over 70 million this year).
And then we all call each other by phone so that the phone network will be down for at least 4 hours.

The activity I participate in is: pet comforting. Like so many others, trying our utmost to prevent them from getting a heartattack. Fireworks are really awful over here! - mcl020, Dec 31, 2012
I could not agree with you more about fireworks. They look nice from a distance, but dogs absolutely abhor them. Send me some sweets. I need them.... Happy New Year! - francobollo, Dec 31, 2012
they are so jummie....ya he comido varios de estos - Aranjuez12, Dec 31, 2012
But those pastries look lovely. The fireworks in Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, and many other places are used for birthdays, & every holiday. The poor creatures there. - katydew, Dec 31, 2012
Bleeeeggggghhhh Aranjuez ..... 'oliebollen' is just oil + flour + dried raisins (I have boycotted them all my life). 'Appelflappen' are a lot better with slices of apples in them, but I am no fan of them either. - mcl020, Dec 31, 2012

Tonight we are celebrating the arrival of the New Year at our Spanish friends' home. They will serve sole fish, Spanish omelet, Iberian prosciutto ham and other delicacies. We are in charge of bringing the grapes and the cava (Spanish sparkling wine) to celebrate.

A few minutes ago I read in the paper that the English people who are over 32, don't go partying, they will just sit down in front of the telly and watch others celebrating all over the world. As I'm over 32, I won't do more than open a bottle of Cava ( the Spanish bubbly, which is cheaper than the French version). Cheers, my friends and Happy New Year to you all!

Lol. That's ok, everyone is using more than one sentence. Celebrations just need more than one sentence to describe. ;o) - katydew, Dec 31, 2012

My Chilean friend puts a plate of rice on top of her refrigerator.

I'll put some on mine too. It can't do any harm.. - annierats, Dec 31, 2012
Really? - francobollo, Dec 31, 2012
Really. I'll ask her next week what the point is of putting rice on her frig. - katydew, Dec 31, 2012
Yes, I am really curious. And I won't follow her example until I know what it's for ;-) - mcl020, Dec 31, 2012

China is not my native country but I am somewhat familiar with the New Year's customs which include making dumplings, getting together with family, visiting friends and, oh yes, the fireworks (the celebration lasts several days).

Over here the Chinese celebrate their new year other days of the year, ?at the end of January?, because they have a different calendar from ours. - mcl020, Dec 31, 2012
Sí, lo sé. In 2013, the Chinese new year celebration (Lunar New Year) will begin on February 10 and will last several days. - kirk1, Dec 31, 2012

When I lived in the southern part of the U.S.A., they ate black-eyed peas for good luck.
