what are the similarities between english and spanish?
1 Answer
Similarities between English and Spanish? Well, they are basic. Both languages are based on an alphabet as opposed to a character based language like Chinese. I am always a little stumped when I refer to a Chinese word and someone asks,"how do you spell that?". Then I try to explain that there is no such thing a spelling in Chinese althought there is a system that is called pinyin which is used to represent the sound of Chinese words in the western (Roman) alphabet. The English and Spanish alphabets are quite similar and, although most people consider English to be derived from German rather than Latin, many of the English worrds are derived from Latin. That and the similarities in the alphabets accounts for the many cognates (words that are the same or are closely related) that exist in the two languages.
But, more imporatant than looking for the similarities is to enjoy that fact that they are different languages. Try to learn to think and speak in Spanish as it is and to not focus on it's relationship to English.
