Addressing someone with a title

I understand that an article is used with titles in Spanish such 'la doctora'. However, I am unclear about the proper way to address someone directly. For example, a PhD university teacher of Spanish. If you were talking to the profesora would the proper way to addres the person be "La Doctora Adams" or simply "Doctora Adams"? (I am not sure I got the capitalisation right.)

If you are talking about the person, use the article:
El señor Martínez está allí.
If you are talking to the person, drop the article:
Bienvenido, señor Martínez.
