I see you are fairly new to SD. One way to show appreciation for other SD volunteer peers who answer your question is to give a vote to one that is helpful to you. Not required, but I've found others are more apt to help if they know you appreciated it. - katydew, Dec 30, 2012

¿Mesero, por favor podría traerme el plato de pescado?

(Waiter, please could you bring me the fish plate?)

Fish is what you eat - pescado.

¿Hay un pez en este lago o muchos peces? (Is there one fish in this lake or many fish?)

Fish used as a creature - pez.

I'm still an intermediate Spanish learner so my sentences may have minor mistakes, but the difference between pez and pescado is right. - katydew, Dec 29, 2012
If you type in "fish" in the translation search box at the top of this page, it will give you more examples and an answer to your question. Hope this has helped. - katydew, Dec 29, 2012
Tus frases están muy bien. Yo solo añadiría "de pescado" :) - Cordobesa, Dec 30, 2012
Thanks for the input, Cordo. Now Kimi-s has a perfect example. - katydew, Dec 30, 2012

As the others say....

Just like we call "pig" (the animal) differently than we call "pork" (the food), in Spanish "pez" is the fish (the thing swimming in the water) and "pescado" (the food). Similarly, "pollo" is the food and "gallina" is the animal.

And "pescado" also means "fished" and is the Past Participle from the verb "pescar" (to fish).

So, if you "fished" it, then you are going to eat it... unless you throw it back. enter image description here

Both words mean "fish". Pescado is usually used for what we would call food fish.
