Why is "de" used en this sentence?
Por favor, trate de recordar. (Please, try to remember.)

Hi ssneale!
Because "tratar" itself, without the "de", wouldn't mean "to try to do something", but "to treat something" or "to process something"
To try (to do something) = Tratar de, intentar, procurar (hacer algo)

Welcome to the forum...Great question!
As Cogu says, "tratar de" means to try to do something. This is a set phrase (a word always paired with its preposition).
Some other examples--
trato de (I try to....)
enamorado de (In love with...)
soñar con (to dream about...)
voy a (I'm going to...)
cerca de (near to....)
