"Thank you for catching that typo!"

"Thank you for catching that typo!"

In English we can use a form of the verb "to catch"; in the sense of "Thank you for catching that typo!"

My questions are:
Q1: In English grammar, what is the word "for"? Is it a preposition?

Q2: Is the word "catching" a participle of the verb "to catch"?

Q3: How would the phrase "for catching" be translated to Spanish? Is the phrase "por la captura" used?

Q4: Can my attempt be made better, more fluent?
¡Gracias por la captura de ese error!

''Catching typos '' is probably ok in the USA, but, over here, unusual. - annierats, Dec 21, 2012

A1. Preposition.

A2. Gerund.

A3. Por detectar (or pillar, which is more colloquial) este error tipográfico.

A4. See A3.

Bandita, until I became a member of this foro, I had never heard this expression. In England it would be more usual to say: ''Thanks for pointing out my spelling mistake.'' Spanish: Algo como: Gracias por notificarme de mi falta de ortografía. No sé.

I have also heard errata for typing mistake although it seems not every one is familiar with it or uses it in that circumstance.

@ Kiwi I found this in wordreference.com

Un artículo del periódico de ayer estaba lleno de erratas.
I think it translates something like, "An article from yesterday's paper was full of mistakes".

And this: errata nf (error en lo escrito) informal error, mistake n

And that is exactly what I am referring to, an error in writing.

¡Gracias, bien hecho y muy informativo!

Errata involves both the mistake and its correction. The complete frase is called "Una fe de erratas". - francobollo, Dec 21, 2012
Gracias, Franco! - bandit51jd, Dec 21, 2012
