enfermo ( ehn-fehr'-mo )

adjective ( ill, sick )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Juan se enfermó después de comer pollo expirado.

Juan got sick after he ate expired chicken.

2. Al escuchar lo que le decía su hija, la madre de Claudia se dio cuenta del pecado que había cometido y cayó en una depresión que la dejó muy enferma y al borde de la muerte.

Upon hearing what her daughter had to say, Claudia's mother realized the wrong she had committed, and fell into a deep depression that left her ill and on the brink of death.

Notes:

The 2nd example sentence is part of our special new Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on December 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Mucha gente está enferma durante el invierno...tanto del alma como del cuerpo.

Many people are sick during the winter...both in body and in spirit.

Which is odd, because Christmas is in essence a joyful season...I think it's the popular version of Christmas that depresses people. - PumpkinCalabaza, Dec 21, 2012
All the buying and consumerism... - PumpkinCalabaza, Dec 21, 2012

When I was young I hated and feared Christmas mainly because everybody kept hammering what a joyous, happy, festive holiday it was. Not without any family! Nowadays the world no longer stands still those 2 or 3 days, which made it a lot easier to cope wit - mcl020, Dec 21, 2012

No sé por qué, pero cuando mi esposa me da una lista de mandatos, me pongo enfermo. Debe ser una alergia.

I don't know why, but when my wife gives me a honey do list, I get sick. It must be an allergy.

No es ninguna sorpresa que Juan se haya comido un pollo muerto, no hay mucha gente que coma los pollos vivos porque es bastante difícil. Posiblemente se trata de un pollo desmasiado enfermo y un poco viejo .

It's no surprise that Juan ate a dead chicken, very few people eat live chickens,it might be rather difficult. Perhaps the chicken was a little past it's sell-by date and a little worse for wear?

Hola Bandit. :)) Hola Franco, thanks for grammar explanation: hacer enfermar - it is new information to me. Thanks. :)) - iana01, Dec 21, 2012
I didn't think two infinitives could be together? I'm not sure I did the correction properly? - bandit51jd, Dec 21, 2012
You can have two infinitives together: Hacer venir (to ask someone to come over). Pretender dormir (to fake being asleep). etc - francobollo, Dec 21, 2012
hacer enfermar a un gatito is how I would phrase it / enfermar a un gatito is also more widely used and easier - francobollo, Dec 21, 2012

Para no ir a la escuela, mi hermanito menor siempre se hacía el enfermo. Pero mis padres eran más listos que él.

To avoid going to school, my little brother pretended he was sick. But he never outsmarted my parents.

Durante este tiempo especial de Navidad, una de las cosas más importantes que hacer es pensar en los pobres y los enfermos que no sólo necesitan nuestro cuidado y apoyo, necesitan nuestra oración también, especialmente en Nochebuena.

De niña, cuando me sentía enferma, mi mamá me daba una caja llena de crucigramas y cuadernos para colorear. Me hacía sentir muy especial.

As a child, when I felt sick, my mom gave me a box full of word puzzles and coloring books. It was very special.
