Many verbs are irregular in their preterite form but these verbs can be grouped together depending on their kind of irregularity:

a) Irregular Verbs / Verbos irregulares (ser, ir, ver, dar)

b) Verbs with spelling changes / Verbos con cambios ortográficos (-gar, -car, -zar, etc.)

c) Verbs with irregular stems / Verbos con raíces irregulares (hacer, decir, poner, etc.)

d) Verbs with stem changes / Verbos con cambios de raíz (mentir, dormir, seguir, pedir, etc.)
