el cuarto ( koo-ahr'-toh )

noun ( room, chamber )

Francobollo is the official corrector for the Spanish sentences. Please correct your posts according to his suggestions. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The winner will be chosen based upon the correct use of the word as well as the number of votes.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

How to post a picture

1. Cuando éramos pequeñas, mi hermanita y yo compartíamos un cuarto.

When we were younger, my sister and I shared a room.

2. En el hotel, Eduardo sugiere compartir un cuarto, pero Claudia está indecisa. Es obvio que Eduardo sigue enamorado de ella, pero ella aún sigue pensando en Ramón.

At the hotel, Eduardo suggests they share a room, but Claudia is unsure. It's obvious Eduardo is still in love with her, but she cannot stop thinking about Ramón.

Notes:

The 2nd example sentence is part of our special new Word of the Day "novela" series. Check it out from the beginning on December 1 and stay tuned tomorrow for the next chapter!

Cuando viajo, me gusta pedir un cuarto con vistas. When I travel, I like to ask for a room with a view.

Saber preguntar dónde está el cuarto de baño es una cualidad muy importante para cualquiera que aprenda un nuevo idioma.

Knowing how to ask where the restrooms are is a very important skill for any language learner.

redecoran un cuarto para el bebé (the rest seems a bit superfluous to me) - francobollo, Dec 17, 2012
Thank you Franco. They say guagua in Chile a lot so I used that. Is it a less formal word? - katydew, Dec 17, 2012
Guagua is only used in Chile. I wanted your phrase to have a more universal appeal for everyone to understand. Hence, my suggestion. - francobollo, Dec 17, 2012
Ok, thanks for taking the time for the lesson in those little diaper/nappie wearing beings. ;o) - katydew, Dec 17, 2012

El recepcionista del hotel me dijo que mi cuarto quedaba en el cuarto piso. Y que era el cuarto a mano izquierda.

The hotel receptionist told me my room was on the fourth floor and that it was the fourth room on the left.

En teoría, mi casa tiene cuatro cuartos. Pero en la práctica, tiene un cuarto, dos oficinas, y una sala de almacenamiento (basicamente un Armario muy grande)

In theory, my house has four bedrooms. But in practice, it has one bedroom, two offices, and a storage room - basically a very large closet.

Vosotros sabéis que en España tomamos uvas durante las 12 campanadas de año nuevo. Pero todos los años hay el mismo problema: la gente confunde las cuatro campanadas que anuncian los cuartos de hora con el inicio de las campanadas de la hora de las 12.

You know that in Spain we take grapes during the 12 chimes of new year. But every year there is the same problem: people confuse the four bells that announce the quarter hours with the onset of the stroke of the hour of 12.
